US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, sanctioned by Beijing since 2020 over his prior senatorial criticism of China, has not visited the mainland despite multiple meetings with Foreign Minister Wang Yi at international venues like the Munich Security Conference in February 2026. Mid-March reports indicated Rubio would accompany President Trump on a planned Beijing summit March 31-April 2, with China signaling the sanctions might not apply in his official capacity; however, the trip was postponed to May 14-15 amid US military escalations in the Middle East, including Iran tensions. No subsequent announcements confirm a Rubio trip before April 30, leaving the outcome uncertain but highlighting diplomatic barriers and scheduling constraints as key factors for traders.
