US commercial crude oil inventories stood at 428.9 million barrels for the week ending August 21, 2026, roughly 1% above the five-year seasonal average following a modest 0.1 million barrel build amid steady refinery runs near 97% utilization and balanced import-export flows. High domestic production around 13.8 million barrels per day combined with strong export demand has supported tighter physical balances in prior months, while ongoing Strategic Petroleum Reserve releases continue to reduce total stockpiles. Weekly EIA Petroleum Status Reports, due September 2, 9, 16, and 23, will provide the key data points ahead of the September 25 resolution, with refinery demand, net imports, and any shifts in global crude flows from geopolitical constraints serving as primary swing factors for inventory direction.
