Alaska's open gubernatorial primary on August 18 uses a nonpartisan top-four format, advancing the highest vote-getters to a ranked-choice general regardless of party affiliation. Incumbent Republican Mike Dunleavy is term-limited, creating an open contest with 17 candidates filing by the June deadline. Leading contenders include Democrat Tom Begich, Republicans Click Bishop, David Bronson, and Bernadette Wilson, plus independent Bill Walker, who draw the bulk of polling attention and media focus. Recent developments center on candidate positioning after Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom's early June exit and final filings, with voter attention now shifting to the imminent primary where turnout patterns and crossover support could determine the four advancers.
