Recent US-Canada trade tensions, including 50% US tariffs on Canadian goods effective mid-August and Canadian retaliation on $20 billion of US imports, have weighed on the loonie, lifting USD/CAD to around 1.385 as of late August 2026. Sticky US PCE inflation at 3.7% year-over-year has sustained expectations for a firmer Fed policy path relative to the Bank of Canada’s 2.25% overnight rate, widening yield differentials in the USD’s favor. Supportive oil prices near $82 have provided some CAD offset as a key export, while Canadian Q2 current-account data surprised to a surplus. Traders are monitoring Jackson Hole commentary, September BoC and FOMC decisions, and any tariff de-escalation for shifts in the pair’s trajectory through year-end.
