Gold (XAUUSD) has surged above $4,600 per ounce in August 2026 after a sharp breakout, fueled by the U.S. Treasury's expansion of long-dated bond buybacks, which eased long-term Treasury yields, weakened the dollar, and amplified a USD debasement narrative. Softer July labor and inflation data further reduced September Fed hike odds, while record central bank purchases (including China's ongoing streak) and elevated oil prices provided structural support. Trader sentiment reflects these macro crosscurrents, with positioning sensitive to real yields and currency moves. Key near-term catalysts include the August 26 core PCE release—the Fed's preferred inflation gauge—and the Jackson Hole symposium, where policy signals could shift rate expectations and dollar flows.
