Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, the world No. 1 with an elite 84.4% career clay win rate, advances to the Monte Carlo Masters round of 16 after a dominant 6-1, 6-3 second-round win over Sebastian Baez, extending his clay streak to 14 matches. He holds a 1-0 head-to-head edge over Tomas Martin Etcheverry from a 2020 Challenger clash, bolstered by superior topspin, movement, and return aggression suited to the slow Monte Carlo clay. Etcheverry, riding a 12-2 clay record in 2026 including upsets over Grigor Dimitrov and Terence Atmane this week, brings baseline resilience and stamina, though facing a steep class jump against Alcaraz's firepower and title defense momentum. No major injury concerns reported for either ahead of Thursday's clash.
