Global seismic activity follows a roughly Poisson distribution driven by plate boundary tectonics, primarily along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where most M5.5+ events cluster. USGS data indicate an annual average of roughly 1,300–1,800 magnitude 5–5.9 earthquakes worldwide, translating to a typical weekly count of 8–15 events at or above 5.5, though short-term variability is high due to aftershock sequences and occasional quiet periods. Recent large shocks—including M7.4 events in Colombia and Indonesia plus an M7.7 in East Manggarai Regency—have elevated aftershock potential into the current week, while a noted 24-hour lull with no M5+ events on August 14 underscores the potential for lower counts. Trader-implied probabilities reflect this inherent uncertainty, with the spread across 7–13+ outcomes shaped by ongoing USGS monitoring, forecast model limitations for aftershock decay, and the absence of strong triggering signals from recent activity.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program, with the minimum magnitude set to 5.5 and the date parameters set to the relevant dates for this market's timeframe (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/search/).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until August 25, 2026, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
This market may not resolve until the timeframe of this market has concluded. If a qualifying earthquake has been recorded on the final day, this market may remain open for 24 hours to allow for revisions to the recorded magnitude, or 48 hours if the prior paragraph applies. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
