The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season's extreme suppression by a strong El Niño, which has elevated vertical wind shear and kept sea surface temperatures from fueling rapid intensification, explains the 94% market-implied probability against a Category 4 U.S. landfall before 2027. As of late September, the basin has recorded zero hurricanes—all six named storms remained below the 74 mph Saffir-Simpson threshold—with accumulated cyclone energy 92% below the 1991-2020 average. Peak activity windows have closed with little model consensus for late-season development capable of reaching 130+ mph winds and making continental landfall. A sudden weakening of El Niño combined with favorable steering could still allow an October or November major hurricane, though historical analogs from strong El Niño years show such outcomes are rare.
