**St. Louis CITY SC entered the U.S. Open Cup semifinal on a 16-match unbeaten run across competitions, sitting fifth in the Western Conference with 41 points from 25 MLS matches and strong recent scoring output.** This form, combined with a solid defensive structure and contributions from forwards like Sang-Bin Jeong and Simon Becher, positioned the visitors as favorites despite the road setting and Rafael Navarro’s cup-tie after his midseason trade from Colorado. The Rapids, seventh in the West on 35 points, carried notable home momentum with six straight clean sheets at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and reinforcements including Morgan Whittaker, yet faced absences such as goalkeeper Zack Steffen and midfielder Reggie Cannon’s suspension. Head-to-head results this season favored St. Louis in two prior 1-0 wins, while Colorado’s attack adjustments after losing Navarro created uncertainty in a high-stakes single-elimination context where a single error or set-piece moment could shift advancement odds.
