Recent Fed policy holds and softening tech leadership have shaped S&P 500 positioning into early August. The FOMC left the federal funds rate unchanged at 3.50–3.75% following its July 28–29 meeting, with the statement reiterating solid growth alongside elevated inflation; minutes and market reaction are due in mid-August. July CPI, scheduled for release August 12, stands as the next major data point that could shift rate-cut expectations and Treasury yields. Corporate earnings from several Magnificent 7 names are also in focus, testing whether recent underperformance in semiconductors and large-cap growth can give way to broader participation. With the index trading near 7,350–7,400 after pulling back from June highs, traders are monitoring labor-market trends, inflation trajectory, and any signs of improving market breadth for directional cues into the week of August 3.
