**Recent US-Canada trade tensions dominate the context.** Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Trump held multiple phone calls through mid-2026 on NATO, Iran, and bilateral trade, including one on August 18 ahead of new US tariff deadlines. Negotiations collapsed later that month when Ottawa rejected US demands and suspended talks, prompting Carney to impose dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs effective September 8 and Trump to threaten further duties on autos and steel from January. Carney has conditioned resumption of talks on a shift in US approach, while both sides face domestic economic pressures and approaching US midterm elections. Trader assessments of near-term contact hinge on whether tariff deadlines, diplomatic backchannels, or external events like the EU address or G7 dynamics prompt renewed direct engagement between the leaders.
