The BJP's commanding position in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation election market stems from its decisive victory in the May 2026 West Bengal assembly polls, where it secured a majority and led in 102 of the city's 144 wards—reversing prior AITC dominance. This momentum has carried into preparations for the KMC vote, now set for December 2026 after ward delimitation expands the body to 209 seats. BJP leaders have intensified ward-level outreach and candidate selection to capitalize on the shift. Traders price in limited scope for reversal, though AITC retains pockets of support in certain minority areas and could benefit from any late consolidation among opposition voters or unexpected turnout shifts before polling.
