Smith, entering as a qualifier, showed grit with three-set triumphs over Hayato Matsuoka (7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4)) and Sho Shimabukuro (5-7, 6-0, 6-3), but his heavier match load and lower ranking temper upset potential amid Bolt's momentum and experience in Challenger events. No reported injuries or withdrawals affect the matchup.
