Gold (XAU/USD) trades near $4,040–$4,050 per ounce as of August 2, 2026, consolidating near yearly lows after correcting sharply from January peaks above $5,500. Trader sentiment reflects a hawkish Federal Reserve stance amid resilient U.S. growth and sticky inflation readings, which have reduced market-implied odds of near-term rate cuts and supported higher real yields alongside a firmer dollar—key headwinds for the non-yielding metal. Central bank purchases and lingering geopolitical risks offer a partial floor. The August 7 nonfarm payrolls report, along with PMI and JOLTS releases, will likely drive near-term volatility by shifting rate-path expectations and USD positioning.
