In the second round of the Monza Challenger on clay, No. 94 Luca Van Assche faces No. 165 Rei Sakamoto, with Van Assche leading their head-to-head 2-0—including a 7-6(4), 6-3 clay win in Cap Cana qualifiers last month. Both advanced in straight sets yesterday: Van Assche dispatched Maks Kasnikowski 6-2, 6-4, while Sakamoto upset seasoned clay specialist Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 6-3. Van Assche enters with strong momentum from two Challenger titles earlier this year and a 21-7 overall, 3-1 clay record in 2026; Sakamoto counters at 15-9 YTD and 2-1 on clay. No injuries reported, standard outdoor conditions favor baseline rallies key to their stylistic matchup.
