Ben Shelton and Joao Fonseca advanced to the BMW Open quarterfinals with straight-sets wins on Wednesday, setting up their first ATP Tour head-to-head on Munich's outdoor clay Friday amid cool conditions and 1,710-foot altitude favoring big servers. The 21-year-old American No. 2 seed Shelton, 2025 runner-up here, overcame Alexander Blockx 6-4, 7-6(8) with 26 winners and four aces while saving all break points, building on his three-set round-of-16 escape past Emilio Nava. Nineteen-year-old Brazilian Fonseca, a rising baseline force, dominated seventh seed Arthur Rinderknech 6-3, 6-2 after upsetting Alejandro Tabilo in the opener, extending his strong clay swing post-Monte Carlo breakthroughs. No injury concerns reported; stylistic clash pits Shelton's lefty power against Fonseca's solid returns and movement.
