Top-seeded Ben Shelton faces 71st-ranked Alexander Blockx in the BMW Open second round on Munich's outdoor clay courts, with no prior head-to-head. Shelton advanced with a gritty 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3 comeback over Emilio Nava yesterday, building on his Houston clay quarterfinal run despite the surface muting his booming serve—his game shone in last year's Munich final loss to Zverev. Blockx, a 21-year-old Belgian riser at career-high form, dominated home hope Yannick Hanfmann 7-6(7), 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets, extending recent qualifier momentum with wins over Shapovalov and others. Traders note Shelton's seeding edge and draw path amid Fritz-Korda withdrawals, tempered by Blockx's baseline power and upset potential on slower clay.
