Gold (XAUUSD) trades near $4,550–$4,600 per ounce after pulling back from three-month highs near $4,700, driven primarily by shifting Federal Reserve expectations. August’s roughly 13–16% rally stemmed from the U.S. Treasury’s expanded long-term bond buybacks, which pressured real yields lower and revived debasement-trade flows, alongside sustained central-bank purchases and geopolitical tensions. Sticky July core PCE readings near 3.3% have lifted September rate-hike odds to around 35–40%, capping further gains. Next week’s August nonfarm payrolls and ISM manufacturing data will directly influence market-implied policy paths and Treasury yields, with any labor-market softening likely supporting gold via lower real rates and a softer dollar while hotter prints could reinforce hawkish repricing.
