Traders assign a 92.8% implied probability to no magnitude 9.0 or greater earthquake before 2027 because these great events remain exceptionally rare, typically requiring simultaneous rupture across hundreds of kilometers along major subduction zones. USGS historical records document only a handful of Mw 9.0+ quakes worldwide in the past century, with none since the 2011 Tōhoku event and recent activity limited to an 8.8 in Kamchatka in 2025. Average recurrence intervals for such megaquakes span decades, and current global seismicity shows no anomalous strain accumulation or foreshock patterns that would elevate near-term odds. A realistic challenge could arise from unexpected clustering in high-hazard zones such as Cascadia or the Nankai Trough if monitoring networks detect accelerating slip.
