Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Barcelona Open prior to his Round of 16 matchup against Tomas Machac due to a right wrist injury sustained during his first-round win over Otto Virtanen, where he required a medical timeout amid visible discomfort in his forearm. The Spaniard, a two-time defending champion on his preferred clay surface with strong home-crowd support, canceled practice and underwent tests confirming the issue, handing Machac a walkover into the quarterfinals against the Andrey Rublev-Lorenzo Sonego winner. The pair split their head-to-head 1-1, most recently in Shanghai 2024, while Machac enters with solid clay form after a Monte Carlo R16 run lost to Jannik Sinner. This abrupt development shifts all focus to Machac's upcoming challenge on the outdoor clay at Real Club de Tenis Barcelona.
