Recent coordinated US-Japan yen interventions in early August 2026 have anchored USD/JPY near 157-159 after earlier tests above 160, reflecting trader focus on narrowing but still-wide interest rate differentials between the Federal Reserve’s 3.5-3.75% funds rate and the Bank of Japan’s 1% policy rate. Japan’s fiscal expansion under the Takaichi administration, including large-scale spending and tax cuts funded by additional bond issuance, sustains downside pressure on the yen and supports the market-implied clustering around the 140-170 range. With leading probabilities closely split across the 150-160, 160-170, and 140-150 buckets, outcomes hinge on the speed of further BoJ hikes, upcoming FOMC decisions, and any follow-through intervention, as forecasts from major banks diverge between 150 and 164 for year-end 2026.
