Both Essendon and Richmond enter this matchup at the foot of the 2026 AFL ladder after seasons defined by persistent injuries, poor stoppage work, and limited scoring efficiency. Essendon’s 2-21 record followed a wooden-spoon campaign marked by coaching transition under interim Dean Solomon and speculation around Zach Merrett, while Richmond’s 3-20 finish reflected ongoing list management challenges and defensive vulnerabilities. Recent head-to-head results have been low-scoring affairs decided by contested ball and clearance differentials rather than dominant forward lines. With both sides fielding depleted rotations and little finals incentive remaining, trader pricing reflects the narrow historical margins and comparable current form. Late injury updates, any surprise inclusions of senior players, or shifts in ruck and midfield personnel remain the clearest variables that could tilt implied probabilities in either direction.
