Tennessee Republicans' successful mid-decade redistricting in May 2026 fundamentally altered the 9th district's composition by splitting the former Memphis-based majority-minority seat and extending it eastward toward Nashville suburbs, producing an R+9 Partisan Voter Index and strong prior Republican presidential performance. This shift prompted longtime Democratic incumbent Steve Cohen to retire, opening the seat ahead of the August 6 primaries. Republican nominee Brent Taylor prevailed in his primary, while Democrat Justin Pearson won his; nonpartisan forecasters including the Cook Political Report now rate the November 3 general election as Solid or Safe Republican. Trader consensus at 85% for the Republican Party reflects these structural changes and limited remaining paths for Democratic success.
