Dune: Part Three holds a narrow edge in trader sentiment for the 2027 Best Visual Effects Oscar thanks to the franchise’s proven track record with the Academy and early indications of ambitious world-building work. The field remains unusually tight, however, with a broad slate of science-fiction, superhero, and mythic epics—including Project Hail Mary, The Odyssey, Godzilla Minus Zero, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Avengers: Doomsday—clustered near even odds because most titles are still in post-production or early release. Key differentiators will emerge from release timing, box-office momentum, guild shortlists, and the balance between practical effects and digital scale, with late-2026 premieres and precursor awards likely to sharpen the race before nominations.
