Recent June JOLTS data, released August 4 at 7.359 million job openings (below the 7.44 million consensus and down 178,000 from May’s 7.594 million), highlights moderating labor demand and sets the baseline for July expectations. This cooling follows a May surge that exceeded forecasts, reflecting volatility in vacancy trends amid mixed ADP private payroll prints and broader employment indicators. With the July report due September 1, market-implied odds remain dispersed across the 7.1–7.7 million range, underscoring uncertainty over whether seasonal factors, sector weakness in healthcare and hospitality, or stabilizing hiring will dominate. Traders price in probabilities rather than point estimates, balancing the risk of further softening against potential rebounds seen in prior months.
