Early festival screenings and major studio releases are shaping the initial 2027 Best Actor nomination race, with Matt Damon’s turn in Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” and Tom Cruise in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “Digger” generating strong early momentum through star power and awards-friendly directors. John Malkovich’s performance in Martin McDonagh’s “Wild Horse Nine” has drawn critical praise as a potential overdue contender, while Ryan Gosling in “Project Hail Mary” and Sebastian Stan in “Fjord” round out the leading names based on tracking and industry chatter. With nominations voting set for mid-January 2027 after eligibility closes December 31, traders should watch fall festival premieres at Venice, Telluride, and TIFF for review-driven shifts, followed by guild and critics’ circle results that historically signal academy support. The category remains fluid given limited screenings so far.
