**The U.S. Embassy in Damascus has remained closed since 2012 amid the Syrian civil war.** Following the December 2024 fall of the Assad regime and the rise of a transitional government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Trump administration has pursued gradual normalization. Key steps include May 2025 flag-raising at the ambassador’s residence by Special Envoy Tom Barrack, February 2026 congressional notification of phased reopening plans, repeal of the Caesar Act, and the August 24, 2026, rescission of Syria’s state sponsor of terrorism designation after a 45-day review. These actions, alongside broader Middle East staffing adjustments announced in late August 2026, have eased legal and security barriers. Ongoing U.S.-mediated talks with Israel and security coordination continue to shape the timeline for full operations.
