Recent energy price surges tied to the Middle East conflict have elevated euro area HICP inflation to a flash 3.3% in August 2026 from 2.9% in July, with the energy component reaching 14.3%. This development underpins the 81.3% market-implied probability for a 3.1%+ annual average in 2026, as traders price in upside risks around the ECB’s unchanged 3.0% baseline projection. Core measures eased modestly to 2.4%, while the central bank’s September staff outlook anticipates a Q4 peak near 3.6% before moderation in 2027. Key near-term catalysts include the final August reading and subsequent monthly releases, which will clarify whether the energy-driven momentum persists into year-end averaging.
