Eurozone annual HICP inflation has accelerated sharply in 2026, reaching a flash 3.3% in August from 2.9% in July, propelled by energy prices jumping to a 14.3% annual rate amid Middle East supply disruptions and higher natural gas costs. Eurosystem staff projections from June peg the 2026 average at 3.0%, revised 0.4 percentage points higher than March estimates due to elevated energy and food assumptions, with quarterly peaks near 3.4% in the second half of the year. Core measures excluding energy and food remain more contained near 2.5%, but the headline trajectory and limited evidence of second-round wage effects have reinforced trader positioning around outcomes above 3.1%. The ECB’s September 10 rate decision and updated staff forecasts represent the next key catalysts likely to sustain elevated market-implied odds.
