Monetary policy divergence between the Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan remains the dominant driver of USD/JPY pricing, with the pair trading near 158 in early August 2026 after coordinated interventions capped a July surge toward 164. Trader consensus reflected in the 150-160 (31%) and 160-170 (25%) bands underscores balanced risks around the interest-rate differential, Japanese inflation trends, and potential further BOJ normalization versus Fed easing signals. Fiscal pressures in Japan and U.S. data releases through year-end could shift the narrow probability edge between these ranges, as real capital at risk rewards precise assessment of carry-trade sustainability and intervention thresholds.
