Recent progress in orbital AI infrastructure is accelerating trader focus on whether a functional space-based data center will emerge on projected timelines. Starcloud, backed by NVIDIA, achieved the first in-orbit large language model training in December 2025 using an H100-class GPU, while Axiom Space launched initial dedicated orbital data center nodes to low Earth orbit in January 2026. NVIDIA’s March 2026 Space-1 platform and Google’s Project Suncatcher, targeting prototype satellites by early 2027, highlight hardware tailored for radiative cooling and continuous solar power. Major filings, including Orbital’s June 2026 proposal for up to 100,000 satellites delivering gigawatts of compute and SpaceX’s large-constellation plans, reflect launch-cost reductions and terrestrial energy constraints driving the shift. Environmental concerns and technical hurdles around inter-satellite links and data return remain key swing factors ahead of mid-2030s deployment targets.

“Orbital data center” refers to any spacecraft, satellite, or equivalent technology carrying computing infrastructure that is launched into Earth’s orbit for the purpose of providing data-center, cloud-computing, or artificial intelligence computing services and which includes at least 100 data-center-grade AI accelerators, GPUs, TPUs, or substantially equivalent compute processors, (e.g. NVIDIA H100 GPUs, Google TPUs, or equivalent or successor chips).
“Successfully launched” refers to any launch which successfully places a qualifying orbital data center into Earth’s orbit.
The primary resolution source for this market will be a consensus of credible reporting.
