Incumbent Republican Mike Flood, who won reelection in 2024 with 60 percent of the vote, secured the party's nomination unopposed in the May 2026 primary for Nebraska's 1st Congressional District. He faces Democrat Chris Backemeyer, who prevailed in a contested primary, along with a Libertarian nominee in the November general election. The district carries an R+6 partisan voting index and encompasses eastern Nebraska areas including Lincoln and surrounding counties, where Republican candidates have maintained consistent advantages in recent cycles. Early polling from May showed Flood holding a narrow lead or statistical tie depending on the survey, consistent with the seat's structural Republican tilt and the incumbent's established name recognition and fundraising position ahead of the November ballot.
