Chris Pappas's retirement to seek the U.S. Senate seat has turned New Hampshire's 1st congressional district into an open race for the November 2026 general election, with primaries set for September 8. The district carries a Cook Partisan Voting Index of D+2 and supported the Democratic presidential nominee by roughly two points in 2024, giving Democratic candidates a structural edge in a low-turnout midterm environment. Multiple Democrats have filed, including figures such as Maggie Goodlander and local officials, while Republicans face a fragmented primary field. Early forecasts project a modest Democratic advantage around 55-45, consistent with trader pricing that treats the seat as likely Democratic but not locked in given the absence of incumbency. Scheduled primary results and candidate consolidation will provide the next clear signals for positioning.

A candidate's party will be determined by their ballot-listed or otherwise identifiable affiliation with that party at the time all of the 2026 House elections are conclusively called by this market's resolution sources. A candidate without a ballot-listed affiliation to either the Democrat or Republican parties will be considered a member of one of these parties based on the party with which they most recently expressed their intent to caucus at the time all of the House elections are conclusively called by this market's resolution sources.
This market will resolve based on the result of the election as indicated by a consensus of credible reporting. If there is ambiguity, this market will resolve based solely on the official results as reported by the United States government, specifically the Federal Election Commission (https://www.fec.gov/).
