Romuald Wadagni, Benin's finance minister and incumbent President Patrice Talon's preferred successor, secured a landslide victory in the April 12, 2026, presidential election, capturing over 94% of votes in provisional tallies from more than 90% of ballots, per the electoral commission. Opposition candidate Paul Hounkpè conceded defeat shortly after, cementing trader consensus at 98.5% implied probability for Wadagni amid low voter turnout of about 59%. This outcome follows parliamentary elections in January that bolstered the ruling coalition, limiting opposition participation. While official certification and inauguration remain, challenges like legal disputes or recounts face steep barriers given the margin, though northern security threats and economic pressures await the incoming administration.
