In the Oeiras 3 Challenger second round on outdoor clay, No. 100 Luca Van Assche faces qualifier No. 226 Roman Safiullin, with trader consensus reflecting Van Assche's higher ranking and fresher legs after a straight-sets 6-1, 6-4 win over Timofey Skatov on April 14. Safiullin, who grinded through three qualifiers and a 4-6, 7-6(5), 3-1 retirement win versus Felix Gill—logging over six hours on court—holds a 1-0 head-to-head edge from a 2022 hard-court qualifier rout but enters with a 33% career clay win rate versus Van Assche's 42%. Recent developments include Safiullin's Alicante Challenger semifinal last month and Van Assche's Marrakech ATP quarterfinal upset of Tallon Griekspoor, highlighting a competitive matchup where fatigue and surface affinity could sway the best-of-three sets.
