Incumbent Denny Tamaki holds the leading position in trader consensus for the September 13, 2026 Okinawa gubernatorial election due to his established record as a two-term independent governor and consistent opposition to relocating the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma to Henoko. Genta Koja, backed by the Liberal Democratic Party as the primary challenger and former Naha deputy mayor, trails significantly amid limited shifts in voter blocs. Recent developments include Tamaki's April announcement of his third-term bid and both candidates' emphasis on economic benefits and unaffiliated voters in the final campaign month, with no decisive polling swings reported. The race remains defined by base relocation debates and national-local political alignments, factors that have historically favored Tamaki's independent positioning in prior contests.
