Israeli forces have conducted airstrikes on Beirut and its southern suburbs earlier in the 2026 Lebanon conflict but maintain ground operations focused on southern buffer zones near the border, where they occupy select towns amid a fragile U.S.-brokered ceasefire framework. Recent developments include multiple rounds of Rome talks aimed at expanding pilot withdrawal areas, Lebanese army deployments in vacated southern sites like Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh, and isolated incidents such as reported Israeli shots near Lebanese troops or retaliatory strikes following soldier deaths. Hezbollah has rejected disarmament conditions tied to any full Israeli pullback, while both sides continue limited strikes and demolitions in the south. These factors sustain trader focus on southern containment rather than northward escalation toward Beirut, with any shift hinging on breakdowns in diplomacy or major Hezbollah actions in the coming weeks.
