The St. Louis Cardinals hold a stronger early-season position at 7-5 after winning two of three games in their just-concluded series at Nationals Park against the struggling 4-8 Washington Nationals, who sit last in the NL East with a 1-5 home record. Cardinals' momentum stems from late-series victories—7-6 in 10 innings on April 7 and 6-1 on April 8 behind Michael McGreevy's solid 2.16 ERA outing—fueled by Jordan Walker's three straight homers and Alec Burleson's multi-RBI games. Both teams face pitching depth issues, with Nationals missing Josiah Gray (flexor strain), DJ Herz (UCL), and Paxton Schultz (elbow inflammation on IL), while Cardinals lack Hunter Dobbins (knee) and Matt Pushard (knee). Head-to-head history favors St. Louis (13-7 last 20), emphasizing bullpen reliability and offensive matchups as key trader considerations.
