This market will resolve to the bracket containing the number of coterminous US states (out of 48) with D4 percent area of 0.05% or more in the US Drought Monitor release for the week of August 25, 2026. Brackets: 0 / 1-2 / 3-4 / 5-6 / 7-9 / 10+. Exactly one bracket resolves "Yes". The count ranges over all 48 coterminous states — the 48 states excluding Alaska and Hawaii. The District of Columbia and U.S. territories are not considered. Each USDM release covers the seven-day period ending Tuesday at 8:00 AM ET and is published the following Thursday. Resolution is based on the first published US Drought Monitor release for the listed week. Subsequent revisions will not be considered; the first published release is final. The resolution source for this market is the US Drought Monitor at droughtmonitor.unl.edu.**Persistent hot, dry conditions across the interior West and northern/central Plains are sustaining and expanding exceptional drought (D4) areas, with the U.S. Drought Monitor showing D3–D4 concentrated in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and parts of the Great Basin as of the latest maps (data valid mid-August 2026).** Below-normal precipitation (often <25% of normal over 30 days in key zones) combined with temperatures 4–9°F above average have depleted soil moisture, reduced streamflows, and stressed vegetation, pushing conditions into the 0–2nd percentile range that defines D4. Monsoonal convection delivered localized relief to Arizona and New Mexico but produced only scattered, limited improvements farther north, while deterioration continued in the northern Plains and Northwest. With the August 25 week USDM map imminent, short-term forecasts for any additional heavy rain or continued heat will determine whether D4 remains confined to roughly 5–6 states or expands/contracted based on model consensus and observed thresholds. Trader odds cluster tightly because small shifts in precipitation timing or intensity near the reporting cutoff can move one or two states across the D4 boundary, reflecting the narrow scientific margin between persistence and modest relief in a rapidly evolving late-summer pattern.
