Matteo Berrettini enters as a wild card riding high after a stunning double-bagel 6-0, 6-0 demolition of Daniil Medvedev in the second round on Wednesday, marking one of his finest clay-court displays amid ongoing recovery from prior abdominal and hand injuries earlier in 2026. The former top-10 Italian, now ranked outside the top 90, holds a 1-0 head-to-head edge over 19-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca from their 2024 Davis Cup clash (6-1, 7-6). Fonseca, surging to around No. 35 in live ATP rankings, impressed on debut by defeating Gabriel Diallo and edging Arthur Rinderknech, leveraging his red-clay affinity and aggressive baseline game at this ATP Masters 1000 event. Monte Carlo's heavy clay favors endurance over Berrettini's big serve, with no reported injuries but potential fatigue from recent comebacks shaping trader consensus on this closely contested round of 16.
