In the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell qualifying opener on clay, Spaniard Daniel Merida Aguilar (#101 ATP, career-high this week) holds key edges over Italy's Francesco Maestrelli (#113), including a straight-sets head-to-head win in February's Tenerife Challenger final (6-2, 6-4 on hard) and stronger YTD form (4-2 vs. Maestrelli's 1-4). Merida, a wild card recipient fresh off a Bucharest Challenger final run, benefits from home-crowd support and rising momentum at age 21, while Maestrelli's recent career-high ranking offers upset potential amid clay-surface uncertainties. No injuries or withdrawals reported; expect baseline rallies favoring endurance on Pista Andres Gimeno.
