This market will resolve to the bracket containing the number of coterminous US states (out of 48) with D4 percent area of 0.05% or more in the US Drought Monitor release for the week of August 25, 2026. Brackets: 0 / 1-2 / 3-4 / 5-6 / 7-9 / 10+. Exactly one bracket resolves "Yes". The count ranges over all 48 coterminous states — the 48 states excluding Alaska and Hawaii. The District of Columbia and U.S. territories are not considered. Each USDM release covers the seven-day period ending Tuesday at 8:00 AM ET and is published the following Thursday. Resolution is based on the first published US Drought Monitor release for the listed week. Subsequent revisions will not be considered; the first published release is final. The resolution source for this market is the US Drought Monitor at droughtmonitor.unl.edu.**Recent U.S. Drought Monitor data (valid mid-to-late August 2026) show D4 (Exceptional Drought) concentrated in a handful of western and Plains states, primarily driven by record July heat, weak monsoon rainfall across the Intermountain West, and persistent dryness in parts of the southern and northern Plains.** As of the August 18–20 map, confirmed D4 areas include portions of Colorado and western Nebraska, northeastern Oregon and far southern Idaho, and the Texas Panhandle plus western Oklahoma—pointing to roughly six states currently affected. D4 coverage nationally remains limited (about 1.1% of the U.S.), reflecting the severity threshold on the U.S. Drought Monitor scale, which requires extreme long-term deficits in precipitation, soil moisture, and streamflow alongside major agricultural and water-supply impacts. Trader sentiment clusters tightly around the 1–2 through 7–9 state bins because short-term variability creates genuine uncertainty for the August 25 week. Scattered monsoon storms and recent heavy Midwest rainfall have produced localized improvements or stability in some D3/D4 zones, while above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation forecasts for much of the southern Plains and West could maintain or slightly expand existing pockets. The next one to two USDM updates (incorporating data through August 25) will hinge on whether these rains are sufficient to shift any D4 classifications or if heat-driven evapotranspiration prevents relief. A strengthening El Niño offers longer-term context but has limited influence on this immediate timeframe. Overall, the close probabilities reflect the narrow window for meaningful change in exceptional drought extent before the map resolves.
