South Korea's EWY ETF, heavily weighted toward semiconductors with nearly 50% in information technology, experienced sharp swings the week of August 24, 2026, closing near $173.64 on the 24th before rebounding to $180.15 on the 25th amid profit-taking and recovery buying. Volatility stemmed primarily from Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix reactions to shareholder return announcements, foreign net selling exceeding 3 trillion won on some sessions, and anticipation of Nvidia's earnings release, which serves as a key barometer for AI-driven memory demand. The KOSPI mirrored these moves, dipping below 6,700 before reclaiming ground on chip buybacks and lower U.S. Treasury yields, underscoring the ETF's sensitivity to global AI capital expenditure trends, memory pricing, and won-dollar fluctuations.
