The extended pretrial timeline and multiple procedural hurdles in the U.S. Southern District of New York case explain traders' strong preference for "No." Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were captured in a January 2026 military operation and arraigned on four counts including narco-terrorism conspiracy and cocaine importation conspiracy; both pleaded not guilty and intend to challenge the indictment on head-of-state immunity grounds plus the legality of their apprehension. A June 2027 trial date was set in July 2026, with motions deadlines and hearings scheduled through late 2026 that could lead to dismissal, severance, or plea negotiations short of convictions on every count. Historical patterns in complex federal conspiracy prosecutions and the possibility of partial verdicts or appeals further support the current 82% implied probability that not all counts will result in guilty findings by the December 2027 resolution deadline.
