Recent redistricting in Missouri, upheld by the state Supreme Court in mid-May 2026, has reshaped the 5th District by dividing its Kansas City core and suburban areas, shifting the partisan balance toward Republicans. Incumbent Democrat Emanuel Cleaver faces a primary on August 4 before the November 3 general election against a crowded Republican field that includes state Sen. Rick Brattin. This map change, part of broader GOP efforts ahead of the midterms, underpins trader consensus favoring a Republican winner at 66%, while the Democratic share at 29.5% reflects the district’s remaining urban base and Cleaver’s long incumbency. Primary outcomes and any late legal challenges to the lines remain key variables within the resolution window.

A candidate without a ballot-listed affiliation to either the Democrat or Republican parties will be considered a member of one of these parties based on the party with which they most recently expressed their intent to caucus at the time all of the House elections are conclusively called by this market's resolution sources.
