Increased numbers of eligible voters, including a record share of EU citizens and the first-time inclusion of 16- and 17-year-olds in the Abgeordnetenhaus contest, have expanded the electorate beyond the 2.44 million who participated in the 2023 repeat election that recorded 62.9% turnout. The September 20, 2026, vote coincides with district assembly elections and forms part of Germany's broader state election cycle, sustaining media attention and campaign activity across parties. Polling shows a fragmented contest involving the CDU-SPD coalition, Greens, Left Party, and AfD, which traders interpret as a catalyst for greater mobilization relative to the prior low-turnout baseline. These structural and contextual factors underpin the market's strong consensus favoring higher participation.
