The Makerfield by-election on 18 June pits Labour candidate Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor seeking a parliamentary seat amid party leadership speculation, against Reform UK's Robert Kenyon, a local plumber and councillor. Recent Survation polling shows the race between them narrowing to single digits, with Burnham holding a modest lead and other candidates trailing far behind. This dynamic has consolidated trader consensus around Kenyon as the clear second-place finisher, reflecting Reform's rising support in the constituency on issues such as cost of living, immigration, and political trust. A BBC Question Time debate highlighted contrasts between Kenyon's local focus and Burnham's broader ambitions, reinforcing the two-candidate dynamic ahead of nominations closing and the final campaign stretch.
