Republican incumbent Thomas Kean Jr. faces Democratic nominee Rebecca Bennett in New Jersey’s competitive 7th district, a swing seat where recent polling and campaign dynamics have shifted trader consensus toward Democrats. Bennett secured the Democratic nomination on June 2 after a primary contest, emerging as the frontrunner against an unopposed Kean. The incumbent’s months-long absence from Congress due to an undisclosed illness has limited his visibility and fundraising edge, prompting handicappers to move the race toward toss-up status. Recent surveys, including a late-May poll, show Bennett holding narrow leads, reflecting voter concerns over the incumbent’s health and the district’s history of close contests. These factors have driven the market’s implied probability for a Democratic victory well above historical base rates for the seat.
