Republican nominee Joe Mitchell holds a modest edge in the IA-02 race for the open seat vacated by Rep. Ashley Hinson, who is running for Senate. The district carries a Republican lean reflected in its R+4 partisan voting index and Donald Trump’s 2024 margin, with forecasters including Cook Political Report, Inside Elections, and Sabato’s Crystal Ball rating it Lean Republican. Recent July polling showed Democrat Lindsay James narrowly ahead or tied in head-to-head surveys, while an Iowa State Fair straw poll favored Mitchell. Both candidates have accepted general-election debates, James has secured DCCC Red to Blue support and outraised Mitchell in one recent quarter, and third-party candidates could influence the final tally in this northeast Iowa district. Trader pricing aligns with the seat’s structural Republican tilt tempered by the open-seat dynamic and Democratic targeting.
