Ongoing US-Canada trade tensions, including the August 22 collapse of CUSMA modernization talks and Ottawa's subsequent retaliatory tariffs, have strained direct leader engagement after mid-August phone calls on tariff deadlines and autos. Prime Minister Mark Carney has signaled willingness to resume only with a revised US approach, while President Trump has continued public pressure via tariffs and rhetoric. Scheduled counter-measures around September 8 and broader economic impacts create incentives for renewed contact, yet the adversarial posture and lack of confirmed dialogue since August 18 keep near-term verbal interaction uncertain. Traders weigh these diplomatic frictions against the practical need for de-escalation ahead of September deadlines.
