Trader consensus slightly favors Canada's population rising from Q4 2025 to Q4 2026 per Statistics Canada quarterly estimates, with "Up" at 52.5%, reflecting a tight balance amid recent declines. The March 18 release revealed the first year-over-year drop since World War II, with January 1, 2026 population at 41,472,081 (-0.2% from October 1, 2025 and from prior January), driven by a 171,000 plunge in non-permanent residents from tightened study and work permits, plus negative natural increase. The 2026-2028 Immigration Levels Plan caps new temporary arrivals at 385,000 while steadying permanent residents at 380,000, fostering uncertainty over net migration. June's Q1 data could tip odds: further outflows bolster "Down," while stabilized inflows support "Up."
